King Kong On Broadway #KingKongBway

22 Feb

I appreciate any matinee or night out on Broadway with family, friends or my girls. I’ve seen quite a few Broadway shows in my time and I’ve loved them all. Just recently hubby and I and a bunch of blogger buddies were hosted to see King Kong on Broadway followed by a Q&A /talkback with some of the cast.

I’m all about King Kong and patiently waited for his arrival on stage. King Kong is enormous and very loud. His facial expressions/features were phenomenal. Danny Miller @dannysworkshop on Instagram is the puppeteer who handles King Kong’s facial expressions.

I loved how it looks like King Kong was really running through Skull Island and the city streets in NY. That was fun to watch. I also loved how he climbed trees and buildings. Bonus: If you’re sitting on top/balcony/second level you will get eye contact with King Kong when he stands up and stares you dead in the face. He also gives audience sitting on ground level that Kong stare as well but on top it looks like he’s really coming for you.

King King weighs 2 tons and there are 10 puppeteers that handle him. This is a physically demanding show and they rehearse for about 7 hours a day and there’s 8 shows every 6 days. There’s also 3 voodoo operators on animation. Hope I quoted that right.

Christiani Pitts Star of the show did wonderful. Amazing voice and talented young lady. She was a pleasure to meet.

You see the puppeteers on stage but that’s what makes this play interesting. It shows the physical side of how much sweat and tears goes into handling King Kong. All the puppeteers, operators and behind the scenes crew get all the love for all the amazing, hard work they do.

Don’t get me wrong the cast gets lots of love too but King Kong is the star. We enjoyed the show and you will too. Recommended for kids ages 8 and up. Children under 4 are not permitted in the theater.
