#AdventuresNYC @NYCParks

23 Jun

The kids and I traveled to the 9th annual #AdventuresNYC in Central Park on Saturday, June 22nd. This event was free and open to the public thanks to NYC Parks and Backpacker Magazine who sponsored this great event filled with lots of activities for families which included:

The North Face Zone
Bear Naked Climbing Zone
Health & Fitness Clinics
Bike Helmet Giveaway courtesy of NYCDOT
LL Bean Aquatic Zones (featuring kayaking, fly casting, and stand up paddle boarding )
Outdoor Gear Exhibits
Hand Cycling
Vermont Adventure Center
Live Music & Entertainment
Mountain Bike Expo
Free Bike Rental & Valet Parking
STHL Lumberjack Zone (including lumberjack show)

Other sponsors were Honest Tea, Cabot Cheese, Ecco, Tent & Trails, Citi BIke, Strider, The L Magazine, and KTU 103.5.

We try to make it every year and make sure we line up for the Bike Helmet Giveaway first because that line gets extremely long. This year there were about 10 people ahead of us. Not bad. We moved on to the North Face Zone where the kids did challenges for prizes and spun the wheel for more prizes. We won hats and stickers. The kids climbed on a bike as if they were hiking up a mountain. Played with the hula hoop and colored. Next was the Honest Tea tent where there were free samples of all their cold teas. Refreshing!!

The kids always rock climb and that’s where we headed to next. The sun was so hot I couldn’t wait to move to a shaded area. This year they had hand cycling for everyone. That was fun for them and my son went on twice. Lots of freebies at different stations. The stand up paddle boarding looked fun but we wasn’t getting wet. Cabot cheese is always good to snack on. Ecco had cute, comfortable sandals. Too bad they weren’t selling any. I wanted a pair so bad. LL Bean had a bootmobile that my daughter took a picture with. It was the biggest boot ever. She loved it!

We had fun once again and can’t wait for next year!! Enjoy the pictures!

@afterearth MY REVIEW @themoms #Smithmamarazzi @officialjaden

1 Jun

When I RSVP’d for another mamarazzi event courtesy of @themoms to see a screening of @afterearth with Will Smith and Jaden Smith I never knew I was in for very powerful, positive messages from Will Smith. Not only was the movie great and the moral of the movie was overcoming fears, but what Will had to say just made it all amazing for me. I have to say I learned a lot especially about attacking my fears. Will talked about how he had a fear of crowds, so one day he walked into the Galleria mall, headed to the food court and asked for everyone’s attention. He said ” My name is Will Smith and you don’t know me now but one day you will.” That’s how he got over his fears and he also did that in high school as well just a different speech. He also said “your words have power over everything you come in contact with.”

In the movie you see how his son’s character “Kitai Raige” played by Jaden Smith has to overcome his fear of creatures while they are stranded on earth or else the both of them will die. Will Smith’s character “Cypher Raige” guides his son through a dangerous journey to recover their rescue beacon.

Growing up Will’s family delivered ice which I thought was interesting.
He also said he met Jada Pinkett Smith his wife and one of the producers of this movie on the set of Fresh Prince of Bel Air when she was auditioning for a part. He said she was pissed because the producers thought she was too short and that’s why she didn’t get the part. She told Will “Apparently I’m too short for you.” He said “he think he’s in love.” Sooo sweet. They dated a few years later.

He also said when he started rapping around the age of 12 he had a rap book with 4 letter curse words and his grandmother found it but never told him. He was flipping through it and there was a note he found from her saying “Dear Will, Truly intelligent people do not have to use words like these to express themselves. Please show the world that you’re as smart as we think you are. Love Gma”

My grandmother would have done something like that.
That letter made him make the decision to not use curse words. He said “It forced a certain creativity she introduced him to the idea to have a purpose behind your choices.”
He also said “You can get caught in randomness if you don’t lock on to a purpose of why you’re doing what you’re doing.” She gave him boundaries that gave him a goal, and focus, and essentially a mental game for himself of what he was doing in the world.

Will’s son Jaden says he’s 14 and he said he doesn’t want cursing in his rap music. He said he is not allowed but Will said him and his wife Jada never told Jaden he ‘s not allowed to do that.
He used a quote from Edward Kennedy’s biography where Edward’s father said ” As a family we have decided you’re going to have lives of value to the world. Now I respect if you want to choose a life that does not have value to the world. I respect that but I’m not going to have a lot of time for you.”
That was deep!!!

Will said that struck him and that idea is the basis of what they say with their children. They say “You have been blessed. It is your responsibility to live a life of value to others, not something that is steeped in ego gratification that is not why we do this, we do this to put things in the world that have value to other people.” Love that!!

Jaden said he had fun working with his dad. You could see the bond they have and how much fun they have with each other. Not to mention they all look alike. I guess Will never thought he would have kids following in his footsteps when he was acting on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. He said he would like the whole family to be on the screen one day maybe like the Partridge Family, or Brady Bunch while the kids are still young. Jaden 14, Willow 12, and Trey is 20. He also said they have to work around Willow’s schedule. Guess she’s very busy. Lol

Jaden has a clothing line called MSFT rep. He said he looks at it as “he’s gonna start a company, but build it slowly, and it’s gonna be a learning experience for him and his friends and one day it’s gonna support their families. What 14 year old is thinking about opening any company to provide for their family? I thought that was great. He has a head on his shoulder and Will couldn’t be any prouder.
Will said “Jaden’s style comes from the courage to wear what you feel”. “Just be yourself, be bold, be brave, don’t care what other people think about it.” I totally agree. I like being different and standing out and don’t care who doesn’t like it. I teach that to my kids too. Our style is different.

Will said “It’s terrifying to raise children and to know how they turn out in the world is largely gonna be based on the things that you do right and wrong.”
He also said “You have to let your kids go. You hope that the seeds and lessons you planted are going to take the root and flower into their minds at the proper time when life gives them a challenge that you can’t control.”
I agree with Will 100%. Will and Jada are good parents in my eyes.

I had the pleasure of asking Will a question but I started out by saying he never ages and he looks good. He did the two finger eyebrow and mustache wipe and was laughing and blushing. I was happy I made him smile. My question was : How did it feel sitting in the background not doing the action part of the movie and letting your son take he lead? Will’s response : “It was really great for him. As an actor he said he’s loud, smiling, fun, always on 10. He said that’s his natural space. To play Cypher his character it helped him get in touch with another side of himself to have to go to stillness. Even a man who had disconnected himself from his emotions in that way was a really powerful exploration for him as an actor.” He said “it was fun but he’s 44 yrs old so he probably got 5 or 6 more years where his knees will work in action movies so he might have 1 or 2 more running
or jumpings in him.
I guess that’s where his son comes in and take over for his father. He’s very young and is the mini version of his father. He just proved in this action packed movie he can do it.

I just want to finish up by saying hubby and I enjoyed this movie very much and enjoyed learning all about the Smith’s and hope one day to meet the rest of the family as well and get pictures with all of them. I did not bring my kids to this movie I didn’t feel it was age appropriate for them. Enjoy the pictures.

Muy Bueno Cookbook Book Signing @MuyBuenoCooking @LaCasaAzulBooks

14 Apr

I took my kids to a book signing @LaCasaAzulBooks bookstore located in East Harlem to hear about and get the fabulous cookbook Muy Bueno Three Generations Of Authentic Mexican Flavor. First let me start by saying this is the best looking bookstore ever!!! I would live there if I could. Lol. The owner is beautiful and sweet and they have so many events and cooking classes. They’ve only been around 10 months so they have a 1 year anniversary coming up in June. It is so neat and quiet, set up is amazing, gorgeous stove that I wanted to take home, and my daughter immediately ran to the kids section where I purchased 2 books and stickers for her, a Spanish/English dictionary for my son, and for me the cookbook that was featured.

A family that cooks and eats together stays together and this amazing cookbook proves that. Three generations giving their audience delicious recipes through their grandmother’s eyes for her Mexican cuisine, their mother’s South of the border home style dishes, and the Latin fusion from the 3rd generation authors and sisters Veronica Gonzalez Smith, and Yvette Marquez Sharpnack.

I come from a mixed family so I grew up learning the Spanish recipes from my father whose parents are from Spain, Comfort foods from my grandmother who was from North Carolina, and my mother whose not too much of a cook I paid attention but taught her a lot as I got older. To this day she prefers my cooking over her own. I cannot stress enough how much I absolutely love cooking, baking, and enjoy having my kids in the kitchen with me learning and getting dirty, also paying attention, and asking questions. Kids grow up so fast and they need to know how to cook and not depend on anyone or fast food restaurants. I’m not saying they should ever turn down a meal if someone wants to cook for them or if they want to go to a restaurant but it’s very important to have this skill.

What made me want to attend this book signing was I wanted to try some new recipes that were authentic and any recipe that you can remember or still have on paper from your grandmother you know it’s gonna be good. I also love the fact that it is created by three generations who will also pass it down to their kids. The pictures are beautiful and makes you want to dive right in. I always wanted to write a cookbook but never knew where to start. Maybe one day.

Veronica and Yvette had a dish prepared for the audience to sample. It was their amazing Mushroom, Jalapeño, and Cilantro Salsa. I’m not a fan of mushrooms but when I tasted it you couldn’t even tell they were in there because the other ingredients were so good as well I forgot about them.

I want to make the Cilantro Lime Rice and the Coconut Flan because my father used to always give my sister and I flan. All the recipes are simple and I can’t wait to try them. I will post pictures when I do. I urge you to purchase this warm and inviting book for your collection and visit La Casa Azulejo Bookstore located at 143 E. 103rd Street between Lexington and Park in East Harlem NY.

Enjoy the pictures!!

@BabyKuuClothing Spring Trunk Show @HaberdasheryNYC

24 Mar

I took my daughter to @HarlemHaberdashery for their @BabyKuuClothing Spring Trunk Show on Saturday. I am so glad we went because we found the dress my daughter is going to wear for her graduation in June. All the dresses were beautiful and I will be a customer knowing that these dresses are organic, manufactures in the USA, and that the owner Talana Riviere and I share a childhood of memories dressing up with our classic dresses, ruffled socks, penny loafers, and bows in our hair. I always said if I have a daughter I want her to dress the way my mother dressed my sister and I when we were growing up. I am glad she loves dresses and is a little princess. If you go on their website you will find clothing for boys and girls. (www.babykuu.com) You can also find her on Twitter as mentioned above and Facebook (Facebook.com/BabyKuu) Talana, her assistant, and my daughter had fun together. They are very sweet and she is an incredible designer.

My daughter also love barrettes, bows, headbands, clips, okay anything that goes in her hair with nice colors or sparkles. Also showcasing @HarlemHaberdashery was Plush Bows. They make handmade head bows for infants and young girls. They also turn bows into clips and headbands. Of course my daughter wanted all of the bows but we narrowed it down to 3 even though she tried to sneak in one more. Amazing prints, colors, and Swarovski bling for your little girl. The owner is Shante Hines and she was very nice and welcoming. My daughter took a picture with her which will be in the gallery below. Harlem Haberdashery is an amazing boutique in the heart of Harlem with clothing that you will see on customers who know style and quality. One of a kind pieces made to order from kids to adults. There is also a wonderful selection of eyewear from @5001FLAVORS to @RebelloEyewear. They are located at 245 W. Lenox Avenue btwn 122nd &123rd. I mentioned their Twitter handle above and you can check out their website http://www.harlemhaberdashery.com The owners are beautiful, friendly neighbors and my daughter and I had a good time getting to know them.

The event was catered with delicious turkey burgers, appetizers, juice for adults, and kids, and amazing cupcakes from PinkCupcakes located in New Jersey. The website is NATSPINKCUPCAKES.COM
The kids also played games, arts and craft, relay race, jellybean contest, and won lollipops, and my daughter won Hello Kitty headphones from the relay race.
Charles Rangel even stopped by to look around.
@GOLDENMAGAZINE were also in the building taking pictures of the kids in the beautiful clothing.
Just want to thank everyone my daughter and I met for a fun Saturday afternoon.
Enjoy the pics!!
