Dental Expo at Jacob Javits Convention Center

1 Dec

I had the pleasure of attending the Dental Expo at Jacob Javits Convention Center as I do every year and I am always excited to see what’s new one the market for my family and I. Our teeth are very important to us and it should be to everyone out there. The products we use have a lot to do with our hygiene and the better we take care of our teeth the less visits to the dentist we will have to make.

At these expos you can either take courses, listen to demos from the actual brand of products, such as Colgate, Crest, Sensodyne, Gum, etc, etc. You can also go to a booth and brush your teeth with their product and take that toothbrush with you along with a toothbrush holder and goodie bag.

I also love walking around and asking for toothbrush samples for my kids. From my experience going to this particular expo for years I’ve noticed it’s gotten smaller and a lot of sponsors are around like they used to be due to the economy.
It’s still interesting to learn what’s new and what actually works better for your teeth whether it’s a manual or power toothbrush, or whether you should use floss or a water pik.

They also give the attendees a great dinner party at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square that is catered with an all you can eat buffet, desserts, and DJ for those who want to dance and work off that food.

Kids are welcomed to the expo free of charge like the adults but not to the party.

The Javits Center offers a lot of free events so if you see something you’re interested in register early.

Thanksgiving in mi casa!!

23 Nov

I was going to do a whole blog on Thanksgiving but I decided to keep it simple. After running around going loco to cook a big meal for my family I succeeded. Everyone were very happy with my dinner. I made a turkey of course that I brined for 8 hours the night before. I also made stuffing, yellow rice, mashed potatoes, green beans with garlic and red pepper flakes, seafood salad, macaroni and cheese and dinner rolls. For dessert there was sweet potato pie, apple pie, Entenmann’s holiday log cake, fresh whipped cream that I made, and ice cream.

We don’t like cranberry sauce so it wasn’t going on the table and I didn’t feel like making collard greens or candied yams. I was pooped. Plus I went to the Thanksgiving Day Parade thats morning while my turkey was in the oven.

My mother said I deserve a treat for making all that food that she enjoyed so much. She mentioned cruise. Hey, as long as she’s paying I’ll kindly accept.

My cousins came over and ate so I winded up cooking for a little over 11 people. There are some leftovers and I might make turkey salad.

Next year I might order a turduken or fried turkey. As many of you know I mentioned that I love cooking but I need someone to cook for me once in a while.

I didn’t take pictures of the food this year. It’s in everybody’s bellies. Here’s a picture of the log cake though.

Running around like a Turkey!!!

21 Nov

I am running around like a turkey with his head cut off trying to do last minute grocery shopping for Turkey Day and I’m about to pop!!  I’ve been so busy that I can’t blame no one but myself. Usually everything is bought, prepped, and seasoned, or marinating. Not this year.

On top of that I won 2 tickets to the Mary’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and I have to decide which child to take with me. Also they blow up the balloons tonight near Central Park and I really want the kids to see this, but I also need to start the food going.

Last minute decisions are crazy. Every year I’m the only one who cooks because I love cooking and no one else knows how. Not like I have a choice. I’m not complaining.

I think the Turkey giveaways this year were even more due to Sandy and the communities are really stepping up. Hopefully everyone gets a meal on Thanksgiving and everyday after that.

Well, going to drop the kids off and run a marathon to grocery stores. Pray for me. Hope there’s shopping carts in the stores. The other day there were none.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
Save me some dessert!!!

Thanksgiving Agenda / Black Friday

11 Nov

Every year I cook a turkey for Thanksgiving and every year I say I’m going to make it different. One year I cooked it in an oven bag which turned out very moist and all the natural juices stayed in. One year I stuffed it with veggies which I rather cook them separately. Most of the years I just cook it by following recipes courtesy of The Food Network chefs, or The Butterball website.

I always tell myself I’m going to make cornish hens and never do. I also say I’m going save myself time and buy a fried turkey because I always wanted to try that but never do. I also wanted to try a jerk turkey but never got around to that.

My job gives the staff frozen turkeys every year and when I say frozen I mean frozen. I need at least 2 to 3 days to thaw it out then at least a day or two to marinate but sometimes we don’t receive our turkey on time so I always need a backup. That’s where Pathmark comes in. If you spend a certain amount you receive a free turkey. There are also a lot of places giving away free turkeys and pantries as well.

One year my sister won a ready made turkey with all the trimmings already seasoned. All I had to do was heat it up but I already had my turkey marinated and ready to cook so I cooked it anyway and gave my cousin and her family the ready made turkey. She was very thankful.

My cousins, and my older son’s friend who I raised for a while come over every year to eat. I enjoy cooking very much.

This year I guess I will do a traditional turkey, stuffing, green beans with garlic, mashed potatoes and gravy, or rice pilaf, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, or rolls, another type of meat, maybe collard greens, of course desserts, sparkling cider. We’re not a cranberry sauce family but I make it anyway for whoever comes over and request some. I’ll probably wind up making more than this.

I will take pictures don’t worry.

I also need to be prepared for Black Friday so I don’t want to overeat.
I usually keep it local for Black Friday. I go to my mall a few blocks away. There’s a Target, Marshalls, Costcos, Famous Footwear, Old Navy, Game Stop, etc, etc. Burlington Coat Factory is coming soon in place of Best Buy. I did good last year at the mall. I waited later in the day and it wasn’t crowded.

Now I just need to go grocery shopping 🙂

Costco/ Chicken and Cilantro Mini Wonton Review

4 Nov

I love Costco so much if I could live there I would. They have everything!!  Bulk is the word. I recently went there to stock up when Sandy was over and found these amazing fully cooked bibigo Chicken and Cilantro Mini Wontons by Korean Food Company CJ. They are delicious and cook in about 5- 10 minutes by pan frying, or 1 -2 minutes by boiling, or microwave which can be used in soups. I prefer mine pan fried. These are great for a dinner party or a snack. I am addicted and every time I go into Costco I buy a bag. They have a variety of flavors but so far my store only carries the Chicken and Cilantro. Run to your local Costco to stock up and let me know if they have any of the other varieties below and how you like them.

Baking with my Kids

1 Nov

My kids and I attempted to make Nestle Toll House Cookies last night and they were awesome! We did not burn them and they taste great right out of the oven. I used @OXO cute orange cookie spatula which says – be a good cookie. I love this spatula which i got @Marshalls for $4.99. I also bought @RachaelRay cookie sheet which I absolutely love that I also got @Marshalls for $12.99. This is the best cookie sheet ever! No sticking, easy clean up, and it matches my cookie spatula. Love orange color for the fall. The biig container of Nestle Toll House cookie dough I purchased @Costcos on sale for $6.99. What a bargain compared to buying ready made cookies for much more and I got the kids to participate and make cookie balls instead of just eating out of the box. We enjoy cooking together as a family.
